Many liquors and liqueurs use star anise as a component (gins) or a key ingredient (Galliano, Jaegermeister, Sambuca).
Star anise is perfect in mulled wine – gently heat a bottle of red wine with an orange (sliced into rounds), 6 cloves, 3 cinnamon sticks, 3 star anise and 1/4 cup honey or sugar – and maybe a splash of brandy for fortification. Simmer on very low heat for 10minutes, and serve warm.
