The Style:

Giant pretzels, giant steins, dirndls and lederhosen, these iconic Bavarian (German) items are only surpassed by perhaps one thing.  AND THAT’S BIER!

Oktoberfest originated in Munich to bid a final farewell to Fest Season.  Every town in Bavaria has a fest between March and October, and the largest town in Bavaria holds the final and largest of the year.

A Märzen is the same as an Oktoberfest beer.  The origin is that the Biermeisters made the beer in March, and conditioned it until their respectable fest.  This beer dramatically varies town to town, but in essence, should be slightly high ABV (5.5% or above), have some to dark colouring to it, and be extremely sessionable.  CARAMAL FLAVOURING ON THE NOSE IS INAPPROPRIATE.  This is a darker version of a lager!  Give this a go, and have yourself an Octoba down unda!

(FYI the only reason I’ve used a California Lager Yeast over a traditional Bavarian yeast is the time of year.  Feel free to add in the customer notes that you’d prefer a Bavarian or Bohemian Lager yeast)
